ST. PETERSBURG, FL -- Some new construction just off the side of the approach to the Gandy Bridge is intended to keep Gandy Beach and its mangroves safer and cleaner. The Florida Department of Transportation is putting up wooden post barriers called bollards, along the mangroves and at the beginning of the open sand beach, which extends out the south side of the causeway toward the twin radio towers. FDOT Spokesperson Kris Carson says the project is mostly about helping the environment. Before, people could drive right up to the mangroves "People are cutting (mangroves), burning them, and damaging them with their cars.
