Back in the 1960s, I swam off what was commonly called Beer Can Pier, better known today as the Safety Harbor Marina Park and Fishing Pier. It was equipped for swimming at that time with a diving board, ladders to climb out of the Old Tampa Bay waters onto a wooden skirt that ringed the covered pavilion on the pier. Sad kids today in Pinellas County don't have such opportunities to enjoy Old Florida of orange groves, pine and saw palmetto forests, unpolluted springs and fresh water lakes.
